Press Release

When was the last time you walked out of a new musical where people were humming, singing, or whistling their favorite tune? If it has not been recently, you will be guaranteed in the Royal Crown Players production of Once On This Island, which is a joy to behold on every level. It is energetic, clever, heart-felt, fun, and moving. Based on a Trinidadian novel, it is a parable about love and forgiveness. Ti Moune (Lisa Goldberg), as a small girl, is brought to a Caribbean island by the gods during a mighty tempest. Found in a tree by Tonton Julian (David Burros) and Mama Euralie (Amanda Sales), they adopt and raise her as their own. They know she has a special purpose in life or the gods would not have spared her. On the other side of the island live the Beauxhommes, an enclave of mulattos who are descended from a Caribbean slave and French settler. The Beauxhommes live luxuriously in their homes behind large gates, and they don't intermingle with the peasants because they have left that part of their lives behind them in previous generations. Daniel (David Beck), a Beauxhomme, drives recklessly into the peasant's part of the island, and crashes his car. The peasants leave him to die as that is what they believe the gods intend. Ti Moune (Arielle Ditkowich), however, saves his life by praying to the gods of Earth, Water, Love, and Death. What they decide is what must be. And what must be is the story told to us.

This ensemble encompasses some of the strongest voices ever heard on the Roslyn High School stage. The gods, played by Vanessa Arcara, Nikki Nussbaum, Brian Rosenblum and Jonathan Yehuda, are wonderful and enrich the show with their humor and potent voices. Melissa Shapiro portrays Daniel’s intended Andrea.  Daniel’s father Armand is played by Andrew Werner. The rest of the ensemble is rounded out by Bridgette Alvarado, Sha Beamon, Christina Combs, Shana Ditkowich, Ian Goldberg, Avian Haviv, Marie Inui, Stephanie Lestz, Dawn Levy, Eric Niederman, Emily Niesenbaum, Brooke Novick, Julie Repole, Doug Ruchefsky, Lee Taglin, Michael Taub, Johanna Weiss and Robin Zelman.

Brad Frey has directed a clever and fast-paced story with staging and choreography by Jennifer Buonomo. Bill Yoscary has created a set that moves from location to location and costumer Lynne Arcara has given us highly colorful and creative costumes.  The stage manager is Jillian Pugatch and the business manager is Zach Galin.

Once On This Island is recommended to everyone of every age. It will leave you humming, singing, or whistling.

Once On This Island will be performed on Thursday, March 13th at 3:30 PM; Friday, March 14th at 7:30 PM; and Saturday, March 15th, at 7:30 PM.  All performances take place in the Roslyn High School Auditorium. To reserve tickets, call the RCP Box Office at 625-6362 or you can visit our web site at http://rcp.roslynschools.org for further show information.  Ticket prices are $10 adults and $7 students.  For the Thursday matinee, tickets are $9 adults, $6 students, and Senior Citizens are admitted free.

What is RCP?

The Royal Crown Players of Roslyn High School have been in existence since the beginning days of the school. The organization has always prided itself on the professionalism of its productions. It has showcased the finest talent in the Roslyn community and fostered an appreciation for the theatre. Past productions have ranged from Shakespeare to original musical presentations.

An inclusive family, RCP has members not only on stage, but backstage as well, with the creative energies of set construction, choreography, lighting, sound, properties, scenic design, costuming, and make-up. Our business staff publishes two playbills a year and specializes in graphic arts. Our box office staff creates and manages a computerized ticket system, while our computer staff maintains all of our computers.

RCP is a “real life” activity, from the nurturing of a script and score to the presentation of an opening night performance. The culmination of different students and talents with unselfish attitudes and the same creative aim, for your enjoyment, appreciation, and love for the theatre, we are the Royal Crown Players.
